چکیده

Males of several palaearctic Syntomis/Amata species (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) possess androconial hairbrushes in connection with the foreleg coxa. The cuticular structure of these potentially behaviour-related and pheromone dissipating brushes is described. Such male-specific organs and signals play a crucial role in the female choice procedure. The presence of hairbrushes was found in 17 out of 28 inspected species of the tribe Syntomini. All members of the Syntomis phegea group (Europe to Central Asia, as well as Caspian, Caucasian and near-middle East species) have these structures, and only three oriental and south Asian, but none of three African species, carry this trait. The common genetic base of this morphological character is supported by an analysis of mitochondrial 16S rRNA from 19 representative taxa; species with hairbrushes form a monophyletic clade and the brushes are a synapomorphic character. This genetic finding corroborates the ethological significance of these organs. Phylogenetic data show a substantial genetic divergence between the tribe Ctenuchini (New World species) and the Old World Syntomini. Furthermore, DNA sequence data suggest a split of the genus Amata (sensu Obraztsov, 1966) in two distinct genera, Amata (without hairbrushes) and Syntomis (with hairbrushes).

Sequence evolution in mitochondrial ribosomal and ND-1 genes in lepidoptera: implications for phylogenetic analyses.

A 2,256-bp sequence of the mitochondrial genome of a lepidopteran (Spodoptera frugiperda) contains tRNAs for valine and leucine, the 16S rRNA, and three-quarters of the ND-1 presumptive protein-coding gene. A 64-bp stretch of unknown function was located between the rRNA and leucine tRNA. Sequence divergence in the 16S rRNA obtained from alignment with published insect sequences is consistent w...

Genetic Characterization of Argas persicus From Iran by Sequencing of Mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (COX1) and 16s rRNA Genes

Background: Argas persicus has a great importance for health and veterinary, it can transmit many infectious agents such as Borrelia anserina (avian spirochetosis) and Aegyptianella pullorum. Distinguishing Argasidae due to close morphological relationship is difficult. OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we performed molecular analyses based on PCR and sequencing of Amplicon derived from 16S rRN...

Molecular Identification of the Persian Gulf Sea Hare (Aplysia sp.) Based on 16s rRNA Gene Sequence

Background: Sea hares of the Aplysia genus are among the mollusks of interest for various researchers to study their phylogeny, bioactive compounds and the nervous system. These mollusks are herbivorous and produce chemical compounds (ink) to defend themselves. The present study provided molecular identification of the Persian Gulf (Bushehr city) sea hare using 16s rRNA gene sequence. Materials...

Genetic variations of avian Pasteurella multocida as demonstrated by 16S-23S rRNA gene sequences comparison

Pasteurella multocida is known as an important heterogenic bacterial agent causes some severe diseases such as fowl cholera in poultry and haemorrhagic septicaemia in cattle and buffalo. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed using primers derived from conserved part of 16S-23S rRNA gene. The PCR amplified a fragment size of 0.7 kb using DNA from nine avian P. multocida  isolates...
